Kwita Izina 2017 – Rwanda’s Gorilla Naming Ceremony
The 13th edition of gorillas naming ceremony- Kwita Izina – was held on 1st September 2017 in Kinigi sector, Musanze district, and was officiated by President Kagame.
Located on the outskirts of Virunga National Park, home to the rare mountain gorillas, the event oversaw the naming of 19 baby gorillas this year.
In only 13 years, the annual Kwita Izina has grown to become a key event on the global conservation calendar. With over 800 of these endangered species remaining in the whole world, whose habitat was shared between Rwanda, Uganda and DR Congo borders, 400 of these Mountain gorillas live within Rwandan territory.
