On behalf of the African Ambassadors Group in Singapore, it is my honour and a privilege to welcome you to this event, through which we are celebrating 2018 Africa Day in Singapore. We are pleased that so many people involved with Africa, are here to celebrate with us.
High Commissioners and Ambassadors,
Members of the Diplomatic Corps,
African Sisters and Brothers,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Today we celebrate the 54th anniversary of the establishment of the African Union. At the time of its launch, the Union’s primary objective was to co-ordinate and intensifies the cooperation of African States, in order to achieve a better life for the people of Africa.
As you are aware, the African Union has already made positive gains in creating peace and security in most parts of Africa, and is also securing the business environment for prosperity and development.
The year 2018 will be a memorable year in the history of the African Union. In March 2018, 44 countries signed the Africa Continental Free Trade Area, during an extraordinary African Union Summit in Kigali, Rwanda.
Earlier this year again, 23 members signed the launch of the ‘Single Africa Air Transport Market’, which is part of Agenda 2063, a project that aim to promote Pan African Integration.
Ladies and Gentlemen,
Africa recognizes the need to partner with other countries and blocks beyond the African continent as we pursue our ultimate objective of self-reliance.
To the government and people of Singapore, it is my pleasure, on behalf of the Africa Group, to extend our appreciation for the huge milestones reached in expanding cooperation with Africa in capacity building as well as trade and investments in recent years.
Africa is seeing more Foreign Direct Investments from Singapore. We take note on more stable growth in trade and this can be attributed
to the Africa-Singapore Business Forum,
- to the Singapore-Africa High Level Ministerial Forums,
- and the crucial role of Singapore Embassies in Africa and Singapore non resident Ambassadors to Africa,
- to the Singaporean Honorary Consuls to Africa,
- Business missions between Singapore and Africa,
- and last but not least to the Government visits between Singapore and Africa.
In conclusion distinguished guests,
With the continued engagement of Singapore in Africa, the Continent will be able to provide the necessary opportunities to its youth, the engagement of Singapore will help the African Continent to alleviate and maybe eliminate the poverty to its populations, and with it, we shall be able to create sustainable development as well as peace and prosperity for all Africans.
May I remind you that this event is a celebration, what we want you is to enjoy, Enjoy the Africa day.
Allow me to present a toast to the Africa day,
and a toast,
